Send the design, rather than just a screenshot#

A screenshot shows what a widget looks like. Exporting its design lets someone import it into Widget Ninja and edit the pieces themselves. You can also keep an exported file as a copy of a design.

The app uses JSON files for editable visual designs. Think of the file as the saved instructions for its layers, pictures, and styles. You do not need to understand the text inside it to export or import one.

HTML is the widget page’s code. Use the HTML controls when working with an AI’s widget answer or editing code. Widgets made entirely in the visual editor offer JSON. Designs based on a widget page offer HTML instead. Open the saved widget in Library and scroll down to see which sharing controls it has.

Share an editable design#

Open a saved widget in Library and scroll below Design Visually. For a widget made entirely in the visual editor, use Export JSON to save or share a file, or Copy JSON to copy its text.

JSON keeps the visual design editable, including layers, styles, photos, and Looks. Live values in an imported design come from the receiving device. If the detail page offers Copy HTML instead of Copy JSON, it is a page-based design; use the HTML controls below.

Import JSON#

  1. Open Import JSON

Use the Library’s Import JSON action or the New Widget → Import JSON menu.

  2. Choose or paste the file

Tap Choose JSON File, or paste the JSON text. Use Check JSON after editing the text.

  3. Review Ready to import

Check the name and contents the app lists. If an error appears, fix or replace the file.

  4. Tap Import

The app adds a new widget to your Library.

The importer accepts widget JSON in the app’s format, rather than any arbitrary JSON file. Its file limit is 50 MB.

Use HTML#

Library offers Paste a Widget from AI; the New Widget menu also offers Paste HTML. Paste the full answer, use the check control, and tap Save.

A saved page can offer Edit HTML, Copy HTML, and Share HTML. Built-in pages do not offer the same HTML editing action. The visual editor’s More → Edit HTML opens the advanced code editor.

Choose JSON or HTML#

JSON
Use it to share an editable visual design.
HTML
Use it for the page’s code, or for a widget made through the AI guide.

Manage a saved widget#

A saved widget’s detail page offers Duplicate and, for removable designs, Delete. Deleting a design used on your Home Screen means those widgets need another design selected.
